Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
originally Newark Metropolitan Airport and later Newark International Airport straddles the municipal boundary between Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey. The airport is owned by the city of Newark and leased to and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The airport is about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Midtown Manhattan (New York City) and about 40 miles (65 km) northeast of Mercer County NJ.
Newark Airport was the first major airport in the United States and the first major airport serving passengers in the New York metro area. Newark opened on October 1, 1928, on 68 acres of reclaimed land along the Passaic River.
The airport now covers 2,027 acres (820 ha) and has three runways and one helipad.
Newark serves 50 carriers and is the third-largest hub for United Airlines.
Newark Liberty International Airport has three passenger terminals. Terminal A, Terminal B, and Terminal C.
Terminal A handles all non-United domestic, Canadian, and some United Express, Terminal B exclusively handles foreign carriers and Delta Air Lines/Delta Connection flights, and Terminal C is exclusively for United Airlines and its short-haul carrier United Express.
In 2015 Newark Airport handled 37.5 million passengers, JFK handled 56.8 million and LaGuardia handled 28.4 million.
